Back to City Climbers
Went to City Climbers to climb for a bit with Deep and Brett from CNS. I definitely forgot about some of the quirks there. For instance, you are required to use a grigri just like in Palladium. Also, you hook two locking carabiners in the front of the harness and then put the pre-tied rope through instead of just tying yourself in. Kind of odd. I guess I didn't notice it the first time because I hadn't really been climbing anywhere else.
Got to climb a few routes, and I'm pretty sure most were mis-labeled. They were defined by color, with white = 5.0-5.3, blue = 5.4 - 5.7, green = 5.8-5.10, and red 5.11+.
Now, from what I can tell, and Brett agreed with me on this, but a 5.6 is basically a ladder right up to the top, and there was definitely a white route that I was not able to send at the end of the night. Worked mostly blues, but did one green route in several stages. Brett did a few reds and greens, and Deep did awesome on his first day climbing, sending a few whites.

Must have looked kind of cool with the skylight and snow?
Ya, I had hoped so too, but it was too dark by the time we got there.
The carabiner thing is for convenience in high traffic gyms - locking in with a carabiner to a figure 8 on a bight is faster than tying and retying the follow through 8 each time (especially if you've fallen on it!). Note that safety-wise, it's just another unnecessary link in the chain, though doubling up makes it pretty redundant.
Were the routes fun?
Yeah, they were definitely fun. With the small space, they're forced to put up some interesting problems. I had to really work on adjusting my weight properly to make different holds.
