Climb on...

Good day to start climbing today! Two hours at City Climbers for Brian, Scottle, Adrienne, and me.

And to whet your appetites, here are a few pics from the Gunks, a mecca of world-class trad climbing (protected with hand placed equipment on lead, as you climb), just a few hours north of New York.

top - High Exposure (5.6)
btm - The Dangler (5.10a)

High E, the 5.6, is actually a much easier climb than it looks (it's on the low scale of difficulty at the Gunks). The Dangler's more physically challenging, but the hardest part is the mental aspect of placing the pro on lead - someday soon...

Had a great time, thanks to Kenway for doing all the belaying!

My hands feel like bricks right now!

Maybe Adrienne will post some pics over at her blog.

Awesome, glad you enjoyed. Check out the Metolius products I linked to, they make some neat grip-strengthening equipment.

Brian, if you already know the answer to the next post, hold off and see if anyone else is willing to hazard a guess...

Yah, it's all about the tattoo ...

Thanks for the equipment links. If you're ever bored, Alex has a hangboard in his lab.

Had a look at the MadRock shoes; any particular recommendations for the 60-70$ shoes. Any reason not to go for velcro?

No particular reason to go for velcro, except that laces allow you to really cinch the whole shoe down tight on your foot, more so than with velcro straps with their two or three points of closure. Climbers who really like to squeeze into their shoes sometimes like the feel and fit of laces. Shoes are a very personal thing, and people like very particular things - the key is to try em on.

Velcro is much more convenient if you want to get out of your shoes between climbs.

Where can you try on shoes in the city? Paragon?

Pictures are now posted on my blog.

Cool pics, Adrienne! How come nobody told me my pants were hanging halfway down my butt?

Brian, the two places I know for sure have climbing shoes are Paragon and EMS (on Broadway, south of Houston). Neither selection is fantastic, but they're reasonable. Try em on at both to check out the option sets available - I can go with you if you'd like. I prefer EMS because sometimes they have a staffer who actually climbs and knows what they're talking about.

So, we gonna start climbing soon?

Scott, if you're interested, we should check out the rock wall hours at Coles and Palladium - bouldering in particular is a great way to build grip strength, core stability, and technique...

I like climbing, I don't like hobbies that take all my money. Of course I can be persuaded to be poor.

I have to agree on the poor thing sucking.

However, we could just go outside and climb some real rocks ...
